Friends riding horses on a beach in Ireland came upon the distressing sight of two baby dolphins that had become stranded on the sand at the waterline at Seapoint Beach in the county of Louth north of Dublin.
Not knowing what to do or who to call, Jenni Hänninen made the decision to handle the rescue herself.
Hänninen, an equestrian visiting from Finland, dismounted her horse, went over to the first dolphin, picked it up and transported it to deeper water. She did the same with the second.
Fellow rider Darren Cannel took video of one of the rescues.
"When I was younger I might have saved a couple of birds but nothing like this," Hänninen told the Independent.ie.
"I just saw the first baby dolphin at the side of the water. I didn't know who to call or if I should call the coastguard or someone.
"So I went over to help, and when I was coming back there was another one which was stranded as well. I didn't even know they existed on the east coast."
Hänninen joked to the Independent.ie that she doesn't plan to give up her day job in financial services to become an animal rescuer. But on this day she certainly qualified as one.
