Hyatt Hotels has joined the global crusade against the use of plastic straws and announced plans to impose a blanket ban across its properties around the world.
[post_ads]Single-use plastic straws and drink picks will no longer spike cocktails and soft drinks served at Hyatt hotels after Sept. 1, the company announced. Instead, eco-friendly alternatives will be used.
The policy announcement comes hot on the heels of that of Starbucks, which on Monday outlined plans to phase out plastic straws by 2020 and replace them with sippy cup-type lids that eliminate the need for straws altogether. The move is expected to save the planet from one billion straws a year.
Other major players in the travel industry that have pledged an end to the use of plastic straws include Alaska Airlines and Royal Caribbean cruise line.
Straws have become a scourge for the planet's oceans, polluting the waters and killing marine life.
