Huawei is teasing the launch of a new phone with yet another novel solution to the notch: a circular cutout for the camera in the top left corner, surrounded by screen in all 360 degrees. An image circulating on Chinese social media, which Huawei has confirmed as authentic to The Verge, suggests the outline of a bezel-less phone with a selfie camera in the corner.
Samsung is also preparing a phone with a similar camera cutout, according to SamMobile and leaker Ice Universe. Both sources agree that the phone will be called the Galaxy A8S, but SamMobile expects a January release while Ice Universe predicts it will come next month. Ice Universe also uses the term “hole-screen mobile phone,” which I choose to believe is an awesome pun and not a typo.

Samsung confirmed earlier this month that it was working on this kind of screen design among others, calling it “Infinity-O.” Huawei tells The Verge that it’ll reveal more information on December 3rd, so we’ll see which phone giant gets there first.
In the meantime, here’s a supposed leak of a Galaxy A8S screen protector from Weibo to help you imagine what such a device might look like:
