Actor Johnny Ortiz, who appeared alongside Kevin Costner in the 2015 sports drama “McFarland, USA,” is being held on a $1.1 million bail after being charged with attempted murder, according to TMZ and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
The 24-year-old was set to appear in court Monday with co-defendant Armando Miguel Navarro, online records show.
The pair allegedly tried to kill a man named Brian Duke “for the benefit of, at the direction of, and in association with a criminal street gang with the specific intent to promote, further and assist in criminal conduct by gang members,” according to court documents obtained by TMZ.
It was not clear how exactly Ortiz was involved in the crime, but it’s Navarro who is accused of shooting the victim, the gossip site reported Monday. The 18-year-old suspect is being held on a $2.09 million bail, according to the sheriff’s office.
Both men were arrested on May 25 following an investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department’s Hollenbeck Division. The agency’s spokesperson could not immediately be reached for comment.
Ortiz also played a role in the 2019 Netflix film “El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie” and in the ABC anthology series “American Crime.”
His family claims he’s innocent and even launched a fundraising campaign last week to try to get him out of jail.
