President Donald Trump called a group of prominent conservatives who oppose him "losers" and defended his record from the right after they launched an advert attacking his response to the coronavirus crisis.
The new ad was paid for by The Lincoln Project, a campaign by former Republicans who split with the party because of Trump and which seeks to thwart the president's re-election, and is called "Mourning in America."
It highlights the tens of thousands of American deaths due to COVID-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus, and the millions of unemployed as a result of the pandemic's impact on the economy. Trump's leadership has left America "weaker, and sicker, and poorer," the ad says.
This is a play on an ad during former Republican President Ronald Reagan's successful 1984 re-election campaign called "Morning in America," which said under his leadership the country was "prouder, and stronger, and better."
Among the advisers to The Lincoln Project is George Conway, a conservative attorney who is married to presidential counselor Kellyanne Conway, and Republican strategist Steve Schmidt, who has worked for former President George W. Bush, late Arizona Sen. John McCain, and former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.
"A group of RINO [Republican in name only] Republicans who failed badly 12 years ago, then again 8 years ago, and then got BADLY beaten by me, a political first timer, 4 years ago, have copied (no imagination) the concept of an ad from Ronald Reagan, 'Morning in America', doing everything possible to get even for all of their many failures," Trump tweeted after midnight in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday.
"You see, these loser types don't care about 252 new Federal Judges, 2 great Supreme Court Justices, a rebuilt military, a protected 2nd Amendment, biggest EVER Tax & Regulation cuts, and much more. I didn't use any of them because they don't know how to win, and their so-called Lincoln Project is a disgrace to Honest Abe.
"I don't know what Kellyanne did to her deranged loser of a husband, Moonface, but it must have been really bad. John Weaver lost big for Kasich (to me). Crazed Rick Wilson lost for Evan "McMuffin" McMullin (to me).
"Steve Schmidt & Reed Galvin lost for John McCain, Romney's campaign manager (?) lost big to "O", & Jennifer Horn got thrown out of the New Hampshire Republican Party. They're all LOSERS, but Abe Lincoln, Republican, is all smiles!"
The Lincoln Project argues that Trump has violated the Constitution during his presidency. It encourages voters to elect Democrats "who support the Constitution over Republicans who do not."
In April, the group endorsed former Vice President Joe Biden, set for the Democratic nomination in 2020, to be president.
"We do not undertake this task lightly nor from ideological preference. Our many policy differences with national Democrats remain," the campaign's website states.
"However, the priority for all patriotic Americans must be a shared fidelity to the Constitution and a commitment to defeat those candidates who have abandoned their constitutional oaths, regardless of party."
The new advert attacking Trump's presidency says: "There's mourning in America. Today, more than 60,000 Americans have died from a deadly virus Donald Trump ignored.
"With the economy in shambles, more than 26 million Americans are out of work. The worst economy in decades. Trump bailed out Wall Street, but not Main Street.
"This afternoon, millions of Americans will apply for unemployment. And with their savings run out, many are giving up hope. Millions worry that a loved one won't survive COVID-19.
"There's mourning in America. And under the leadership of Donald Trump our country is weaker, and sicker, and poorer. And now, Americans are asking, if we have another four years like this, will there even be an America?"
